The objective

What the trial set out to test

A commercial tomato operation in Georgia wanted to raise marketable yield without changing its existing fertility and crop-protection program. The trial tested whether an ABI microbial consortium, a blend of beneficial bacteria and fungi built entirely from the strains ABI produces, could increase carton yield when added to the grower's standard inputs. The consortium was applied across a 20-acre treated zone, with an adjacent 20-acre zone kept on the standard program as an untreated control.

Starting point

The baseline

The untreated 20-acre zone yielded 2,200 cartons per acre, 44,000 cartons in total, representing $26,400 in gross profit per acre and $528,000 across the zone. In fresh-market tomatoes, carton yield per acre is the number that decides whether a block is profitable, so it was the metric the trial was built around.

The results

What the consortium delivered

The treated zone yielded 3,000 cartons per acre versus 2,200 for the control, a gain of 800 cartons per acre, or 36%. Across 20 acres that was 60,000 cartons versus 44,000, and gross profit rose from $528,000 to $720,000, roughly $192,000 in additional gross profit. Because both zones ran the same fertility and crop-protection program, the difference reflects the added contribution of the microbial consortium.
